Our Story
Every story has a beginning, and WRU are no exception. The first Welsh national team was assembled back in 1881 and rugby has since become the beating heart of our nation. It breathes life into communities. Nurtures our children. And unites Wales as one.
Our famous red jersey has been through a lot. It’s experienced triumph, heartbreak and the downright impossible. Our list of rugby legends continues to grow and the sights and sounds of the 2005, 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2019 Grand Slams will never be forgotten.
Our game is a game for all and the women’s game continues to grow and thrive with pioneers like Liza Burgess, Rachel Taylor and Siwan Lillicrap demonstrating their passion for the game on and off the pitch.
Many of our greats started their careers at their local clubs and schools just like everybody else. In fact, the journey to the biggest stage begins at grassroots, that’s why we want Welsh Rugby to create as many opportunities as possible. So we focus on our vision which is more people, more often, more enjoyment and more success.
Welsh rugby has a glittering past, an exciting present and a wonderful future.
