Council Members
The WRU Council is a key body of the WRU and it’s responsibilities include:
- To formulate the strategy for Community Rugby (which is presented for consideration and approval by the WRU Board) and to oversee its execution. The Council delegates the management and delivery of the strategy to the Community Game Board (a sub-committee of the WRU Board).
- To provide effective two-way communication between the WRU Board and its clubs, including broader stakeholder groups as appropriate.
The Council currently comprises of 19 members who have been elected by the community clubs. However, the WRU Board are seeking to appoint up to 6 additional Council members, to provide broad representation of all rugby interests in Wales and the communities we serve.
Closing Date: 30 September 2025
Remuneration: This role is on a volunteer basis, and you will not be paid for your time as a volunteer, but you may receive reimbursement for specific, agreed expenses and allowances in line with the WRU’s allowance framework.
Location: Hybrid
Time Commitment: It is anticipated that the time commitment for this role will be approximately one day every two months, including preparation and attendance at Council meetings which are held in person and virtually. Occasionally, there may be requests to participate in WRU Sub Committees and working groups, which have separate time commitments.
Contractual status: Initial term of one year, with the option of extension for a further year.
The Person
Whilst members of the Council are not involved in any of the executive activities of the WRU or the governance activities of the WRU Board, they play an important role in providing two-way communication between the WRU and the Welsh rugby community ecosystem. As such, members of the Council should demonstrate:
- Good communication and listening skills
- Ability to engage and work collaboratively
- Ability to embrace and support change
- Ability to devote the necessary time to the role
- High levels of integrity
- Knowledge and interest of Welsh rugby
- Ability to act as an ambassador for the WRU
- Commitment to embracing all aspects of equality, diversity, and inclusion
The Role
We value diverse perspectives and lived experiences and are committed to growing our Council to reflect the full breadth of the Welsh rugby community. We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, experiences, and identities and especially encourage applications from individuals with backgrounds or insights in education, disability sport, women and girls’ rugby, volunteering, or underrepresented communities. In particular we are looking for:
- State secondary school education experience.
To bring insight and knowledge of state education curriculum for 12-18 year olds, what is needed to support young people and the evolving education agenda including future trends and learnings.
- Private/Independent school education experience.
To bring insight and knowledge on curriculum for 12-18 year olds, what is needed to support young people and the evolving independent education agenda including future trends and learnings.
- University/College education experience.
To help identify future trends and how to attract, inspire and retain players, coaches, officials and volunteers to grow the game for the future as well as accessing vocational and research opportunities; also potential to consider postgraduates moving into teaching.
- Disability sport experience.
To provide the awareness of the needs and strategy for disability inclusiveness.
- Welsh Government experience.
To provide recent knowledge of the government ecosystem and relationships, especially in relation to the sport and health/wellbeing agendas for young people as well as awareness of funding, partnerships and collaboration opportunities.
- Women and girl’s rugby experience.
To help identify future trends and how to attract, inspire and retain players, coaches and volunteers to grow the game for the future.
- Experience of attracting and retaining volunteers.
To help bring a focus on the challenge of attracting and retaining volunteers to support local clubs.
- EDI specialist who understands the barriers to our wider community, being engaged and has experience of engaging with underrepresented groups and ethnically diverse communities.
- Geographical representation across Wales, in particular North Wales, is also a focus as is Welsh language capability.
Other experience which we are also interested in:
- Experience of grant applications, foundations and funding including knowing what the opportunities are and how to access funding
- Experience of securing and activating sponsorship opportunities
- Young player (male and/or female) to bring in the voice of youth
- Ethnic diversity representation
- Match official experience
As part of the appointment process all candidates will be required to complete a Fit and Proper Persons Attestation and are subject to any further background checks deemed necessary.
WRU Requirements
The WRU require that individuals are proficient in IT skills, specifically Microsoft packages. Excellent written and verbal communications are essential, along with the ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh and a Valid UK Driver's License is desirable.
